Chanel Rouge Noir was first released in the mid-90s and officially brought into cult status when Uma Thurman wore it in Pulp Fiction. If you don't believe how iconic this polish is, check out it's own Wikipedia page. I think the best way to describe this sexy blood red polish is in one word: classic. So of course, there has to be a dupe... right? Enter Revlon Vixen; a deep, vampy red. Let's take a look at how they compare.
I don't think my skin has ever looked this pale !
The main difference in between the two is that Vixen has a sort of jelly quality, whereas Rouge Noir has, dare I say, a blood-like consistency. Rouge Noir's application is fantastic, I can not gush enough about it, it is just amazingly buttery and pigmented. On the other hand, Vixen takes a lot of patience and practice. It leaves bald spots, no matter how long I wait between coats, and takes a lot longer to dry. It is frustrating to work with... I think the bald spots are still apparent in the picture above! Just to show the pigmentation, here they are with one coat each:Note: Rouge Noir is part of the permanent line up at Chanel counters here in Canada, but I believe it is only released as part of certain collections in the US.
Edit- Eugenia from OmmorphiaBeautyBar has an excellent post on the history of Chanel Vamp. Click here to see it!
Really cool comparison post! I went to the Wikipedia link and got stuck reading about beauty products for ages. There should be a name for when that happens. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember it being known as Chanel Vamp ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat comparison! Thanks!
ReplyDeletelove the comparison, but I'm a Rouge Noir girl all the way... actually I don't own any Revlon nail polish... I'm a polish snob :)
ReplyDeleteI personally think that Revlon does dupes like nobody's business. I prefer Perplex and Carbonite to their Chanel counterparts, not only because of price, but because I like their formula and brushes better. I'm surprised that given the hype around Rouge Noir, Vixen hasn't gotten more buzz. Thanks for the post!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comparison, Tasha! This color looks smexy on you. Love it!
ReplyDeleteSo weird...we both posted about this iconic Chanel shades within days of each other!! I will always love Rouge Noir and as a testament to how well it withstands trends as well as time, my bottle IS an original run from 1994 - and still applies like a dream! Let's see modern day formulas compare to that! I love the contrast of your paler skin next to the deep red of Rouge Noir; as to Vixen, I'm not even tempted...why go for the fake when you can experience the original, right?! Still, it's nice to know there are alternatives out there for folks not wishing to fork over the big $$$...looks pretty close!
ReplyDeleteVixen is close enough for me; thanks for the comp!
ReplyDeletetoo crazy for words!
